Hishikawa Moronobu Reproduction Woodcut Print
Item Details
An exceedingly faithful reproduction of an original 1680 woodcut by ancient master Hishikawa Moronobu (1618 – 1694). The print was originally purchased in Tokyo, most likely in the mid- to late 1970s. It is titled ‘In the Kitchen’ and features the black-and-white version of this graphic which is an incredible example of pre Edo period Japanese printmaking. Original prints from this time are exceedingly rare and typically exist only in the collections of private institutions – in this particular case, Harvard’s. The print is utterly faithful in its reproduction as is proudly proclaimed by the label to the verso ‘Woodblock Reproduction by Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints Tokyo, Japan…Reproduced by hand carved woodblocks cut exactly according to the original; hand-printed on Japanese handmade paper, with natural-dye watercolors the same as were used for the original.’ This print is presented in a wooden frame with black paint and a single creme colored mat with salmon colored edge.
