Based in Granada, Nicaragua, Ricardo Maya is a Cuban painter, sculptor, illustrator and designer. His work expresses themes of human psychology with faces focusing on emotion and bodies representing a map of life. Influenced by renowned 20th century artists such as Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Pablo Picasso, Maya’s vivid paintings often feature Cubist and Surrealist themes. Many of his compositions incorporate motifs that are semiotic signs for the artist’s personal lexicon and codes. His abstract portraits of female figures incorporating exotic birds and insects recall the symbolic portraits of Frida Kahlo, another artist who influenced Maya, while his paintings of male laborers recall the Social Realist paintings of the Mexican muralist painters Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Maya’s work has been collected and exhibited internationally in several countries, including Canada, England, Belgium and Austria.
