During the 1940s, Dohanos started to work as an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, and in doing so established his distinctive genre illustrations and the content for which he is recognized today. His work has been exhibited in various private and public institutions including The Cleveland Museum, Avery Memorial of Hartford, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, New Britain Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
