Kingman was a Chinese American master watercolorist best known for his modernist Californian School style urban landscapes. Born in California, Kingman moved to Hong Kong as a child. There he studied calligraphy and watercolor at Chan Sun Wen School under the tutelage of Szeto Wai. As a teenager, he returned to the United States and attended Fox Morgan Art School. His first solo show was held at the San Francisco Art Association in 1936 and gained the artist national success. During the 1930s, he worked with the Works Progress Administration, creating over 300 artworks. By the early 1940s, Kingman was a fellow for the Guggenheim. After serving as a map artist during World War II, he taught art at Columbia University and Hunter College and later served as a cultural ambassador for the United States Department of State. Kingman found success again as an illustrator for the film industry. Kingman has been honored with many awards and his works are held in respected collections.
