Painter, printmaker, and photographer Yasuo Kuniyoshi was born in Japan and emigrated to the United States in 1906 at age sixteen. He studied at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League in New York under the tutelage of Kenneth Hayes Miller. Known for incorporating symbolic motifs in his work, Kuniyoshi’s compositions were conglomerations of painting from life and from memory. In 1948, he became the first living artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His work has been represented by other renowned institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
