Sharp may be best known for his Western portraits, cultural life, and landscapes. Sharp studied, and later taught, at the Art Academy of Cincinnati during the turn of the 19th century. He was one of the founding members of the Cincinnati Art Club and the eldest founder of the Taos Society of Artists in New Mexico. President Theodore Roosevelt admired the artistic depictions of Native American life and commissioned Sharp to create over 200 portraits of Native Americans in and around the Little Bighorn Battlefield site. Sharp’s works are held in many collections, notably the Smithsonian Institutions, Museum of New Mexico, Cincinnati Museum of Art, and many others.

Condition

- inpainting throughout craquelure across the painting; scratch with a slight indent to the right shoulder of the figure; scratches with paint loss to the lower corners of the painting; protrusion to the canvas to the lower left corner from material previously trapped between the canvas and the stretcher; chips and loss to the molding of the frame with overpainting to many of the lost sections; discoloration, stains, and abrasions to the finish.
