Born in Iowa, J. Clinton Shepherd was known for his paintings of animals and American western subjects. He studied at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the Art Institute of Chicago. After moving to New York, he worked as an illustrator for multiple magazines, novels, and publications including Collier’s, The Saturday Evening Post, and Popular Publications, to name a few. In 1938, the artist moved to Florida where he taught art at Barry College and became the first Director Norton Gallery School of Art in West Palm Beach. He also became known for his murals such as his 98-foot mural of the Everglades commissioned by the U.S. Sugar Corporation. His work has been exhibited by multiple institutions including the Birmingham Museum of Art, the R.W. Norton Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among many others.
