Edward Curtis was an award-winning photographer and ethologist. He left school at a young age to pursue photography and, with little formal education, managed to create a partnership at a photography studio in Seattle, Washington. He eventually met and befriended anthropologist George Grinnell who urged Curtis to be the photographer for expeditions in the Pacific Northwest. Curtis spent the late 19th and early 20th centuries traveling the American west photographing Native Americans from New Mexico to Alaska. In 1906, J.P. Morgan assisted in the funding of The North American Indian, a photography project which documented the traditional life of Native Americans. Many of Curtis’s photographs were the first images of Native peoples in North America. Curtis’s photographs can be found internationally in public and private collections, notably the Wellcome Collection in London, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and many others.
