Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Martha Bowman studied at the New York School of Industrial Art for Women and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under William Merritt Chase. She later taught Pedagogy at Columbia University and gave private art classes at her studio. Charles Demuth was among her students that she taught in her studio.

- stretcher marks to outer margins; significant abrasion from center to lower right; abrasions to outer margins; abrasion to left of hat; abrasion to forehead; significant wear, loss, staining and abrasions to edges; minor paper accretion to lower left; wear, toning, staining and abrasions to verso.
