Photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) began his career by studying under his Uncle Nakash before working with H. Garo of Boston. In 1931, he opened his own studio and learned lighting techniques at the Ottawa Little Theatre. Karsh photographed Winston Churchill in 1941 after meeting and photographing the Prime Minister Mackenzie King while Franklin Delano Roosevelt made history by being the first American President to pay an official visit to Canada. After photographing Churchill, the photographer’s career blossomed. Some of his notable portraits include those of Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Helen Keller with Polly Thompson, Fidel Castro, and Grace Kelly.
