Saul Steinberg was a Romanian-American cartoonist and illustrator whose work was influenced by Cubism, Dada, and the Pop art movement. He attended the University of Bucharest and the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he studied architecture. After fleeing antisemitism in Europe, Steinberg arrived in the United States in 1942. Following World War II, he established himself as an illustrator, submitting his drawings for popular publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Fortune, and, most famously, The New Yorker. Steinberg’s varied output reflects humor and modernist attitude in a chaotic world. Today, his work belongs in permanent collections around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
