RKO Albee Theater Painting

Item Details

According to the owner, this item is an RKO Albee Theater painting titled ‘Roman Garden’. This painting on canvas is by F. L. Ford and was originally in the Cincinnati RKO Albee Theater. The painting hangs inside a wood frame with cording, a bow, and tassels draping down. The scene is a Roman garden with a young lady smelling roses as she dangles her feet in the water of the pool and creates swirls around her feet. In the background is a potted plant. The pot has faces that resemble Zeus. This is a very unusual piece that is not only lovely but has great historical significance. It is marked with the title ‘Roman Garden’ to the lower mid front. The painting is signed by the artist ‘F. I. B. Ford 1925’ in the lower right. On the reverse side, ‘Painted by Francis J. Ford, Month Of June 1925’ is written in ink. The RKO Albee Theater was opened with great fanfare on Christmas Eve in 1927. It was demolished in 1977.

This painting is in good condition for the age. There is a line of discoloration toward the left side in the area of the water by her foot.
