Born in Erie, John Silk Deckard worked in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, and printmaking, and became well versed in sculpture by the 1970s. He studied with the renowned artist and teacher Joseph Plavcan before attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with the help of a National Scholastic scholarship, then continued his studies at Edinboro State College and Carnegie-Mellon University. Throughout his career, he was featured in exhibitions at numerous prestigious institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and Museum of Fine Art, Boston; and the Brooklyn Museum among others. In. addition, Deckard’s work can be found in several private and public collections, including those of the National Gallery of Art, the Wichita Art Museum, the Erie Art Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum.
