Paul Ashbrook, born Paul Von Eschenbach in New York in 1867, studied at the Art Students League, under William Merritt Chase. He went on to study under Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he later taught. He worked for the Stonebridge Lithographic Company of Cincinnati designing posters for the Barnum and Bailey Circus, and served as president of the Cincinnati Art Club, before leaving to travel through Europe and Mexico.
