"Black Skimmers of Sanibel” Original Artwork by Carl Schmuelling

Item Details

An original mixed media painting titled ‘Black Skimmers of Sanibel’ is signed and dated 12-6-83 by Cincinnati artist Carl Schmuelling and displayed in a custom beveled black trim finished wood frame. Schmuelling, a Cincinnati native and architect, was born in 1906. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with B.S. in Architecture in 1931 after winning the Doric Order Prize in 1927, and second place in the Harry Hake Design Competition. Schmuelling had a very full career as one of Cincinnati’s leading architects. In 1942 he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees on Guadalcanal. He studied art at the Cincinnati Art Academy and, after retirement from architectural practice, he concentrated on his passion for art by creating watercolors with drawings and pastels. Most of his work was inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of some of his favorite places, such as Sanibel Island, FL, and The Cincinnati Nature Center and Zoo. Carl shared some of his pieces in several one-man shows and exhibitions before he passed in 2009 at the age of 103.
