Sharp may be best known for his Western portraits, cultural life, and landscapes. Sharp studied, and later taught, at the Art Academy of Cincinnati during the turn of the 19th century. He was one of the founding members of the Cincinnati Art Club and the eldest founder of the Taos Society of Artists in New Mexico. President Theodore Roosevelt admired the artistic depictions of Native American life and commissioned Sharp to create over 200 portraits of Native Americans in and around the Little Bighorn Battlefield site. Sharp’s works are held in many collections, notably the Smithsonian Institutions, Museum of New Mexico, Cincinnati Museum of Art, and many others.

- minor accretions throughout, with small puncture to the “P” of signature; foxing and surface abrasions to verso; scratching and chipping to frame, with marked area of finish loss along bottom edge and detaching of applied strips of green velvet.
