Untitled (Central Park, New York)

Signed “Adolf Dehn” to the lower right
Adolf Arthur Dehn was raised in Minnesota before studying at the Minneapolis Art Institute and later, the Art Students League in New York. In the early 20th century, Dehn moved to Europe with his wife retaining a promising career as a magazine illustrator. He was considered a very politically motivated individual who kept a watchful eye on social scenes and norms. Upon returning to the United States, Dehn began exhibiting his European and New England landscape paintings which didn’t gain the popularity he may have expected. Shortly after, he began creating watercolor landscapes with some influence from the Social Realism style, and this created new commercial opportunities for his business. Dehn’s artworks are collected in many private and public institutions notably, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Minneapolis Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and many others.
