Gen Paul was a self-taught artist immersed in the bohemian lifestyle of Montmartre in Paris. After losing his leg in World War I, he pursued painting and continued to do so for nearly 60 years. Paul is particularly known for his Expressionist paintings often exhibiting vibrant colors, loose gestural delineations, and textural impasto. While in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, and Galerie Bing with renowned Modernists such as Picasso, Rouault, and Soutine. He also produced a large fresco for the Pavillon de Vins de France at the 1937 International Paris Exposition. Retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held at Galerie Drouant-David (1952), the Musée de Montmartre (1986), and the Museum Les Cordeliers (1995). Other institutions that have exhibited and collected his work include the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the Galerie des Modernes, and Gilden’s Art Gallery, among others.
