Frank McCarthy was an acclaimed iconic western genre artist who rose to prominence with the nostalgic depictions of dynamic romance and action scenes. He began his career studying at the Art Students League of New York and at the Pratt Institute. Once he left school McCarthy opened a studio where he accepted commercial commissions from magazines, advertisers, book publishers, and even movie poster illustrations such as The Great Escape (1963) and Lawman (1971) among many others. McCarthy eventually began to produce paintings of western genre scenes and quickly gained popularity for his works. He was able to capture a unique movement and drama within his illustrations that drew the attention of any audience filling them with a nostalgia and remembrance of the Old West. He even received the Franklin Mint Gold Medal for Excellence in Western Painting in 1973. McCarthy’s works are collected internationally in public and private collections.
