Born in Suffolk in 1923, Jeffery Camp is best known for his expressive landscapes on unconventional supports. Camp studied at Lowestoft in Suffolk, Ipswich School of Art, and finally at Edinburgh College of Art in the early 1940s. After graduating, Camp was awarded an Andrew Grant Traveling Scholarship (1944 and 1945) and a David Murray Bursary for landscape painting (1946). Camp held teaching posts at Chelsea School of Art from 1960 to 1961 and at the Slade School of Art from 1963 to 1988. A distinct component of Camp’s work is unusually shaped canvases depicting vivid color and stylized compositions. Camp was known to say, “My pictures are asymmetrical. The odd shapes more easily contain a variety of thoughts.” Camp was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1974 and was featured in many solo exhibitions at South London Art Gallery, Serpentine Gallery, and notably Nigel Greenwood Gallery, to name a few.
