Lionel Walden was born in Connecticut, but it was when family moved to Minnisota that he gained an appreciation for art. As a young adult he traveled to Paris, which he would later consider his home, and studied with E.A. Carolus-Duran (1837-1917). He won several awards at the Paris Salon for his seascape and harbor scene oil paintings and was given the nickname “King of Bohemia.” It was in Paris that Walden was also knighted to the French Legion of Honor. In 1911, Walden made his first of many visits to Hawaii and became an admirer of the island’s beauty. He became captivated by the reflections of light from the coastal waters. Walden soon became praised for his Hawaiian seascapes and is still considered one of the best seascape artists in Hawaii. Walden’s artworks are held in various private and public institutions, notably the Musée d’Orsay, the Brooklyn Museum, the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, the Hawaii Museum of Art, and Musée des Beaux-Arts of Quimper in France.
