Tom Baril was born in Putman, Connecticut and is known for his floral and cityscape Polaroid and wet-collodion photographs. He uses a unique technique where he shoots through a pinhole camera with minimal depth of field to create ominous and lucious photographs. He received a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and he worked for notorious photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in the 1980s. Even now, Baril still prints for the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. Tom Baril’s work can be found in many private and public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
