Mostly self-taught, he displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied briefly in Dusseldorf, Germany then returned to Cincinnati in 1857 where he taught students in his Fourth Street studio and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes. Lindsay was an early member of the Cincinnati Art Club and his work has been collected and exhibited by the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other institutions.
