Mostly self-taught, he displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied briefly in Dusseldorf, Germany then returned to Cincinnati in 1857 where he taught students in his Fourth Street studio and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes.
