As a child, Marie Caire-Tonoir attended the same school as the renowned Impressionist Berthe Morisot, and studied under Joseph Guichard and Pierre Miciol. She met her husband Jean Caire in 1887, and together they trained at the
Académie Julian in Paris. Unlike her husband, who preferred to paint en plein air, Caire-Tonoir was a Realist who focused on the female subject in her genre scenes, that often featured women in outdoor and landscape settings. Working at the end of the 19th century, she dealt with the social pressures and challenges of becoming successful woman artist. Throughout her career she exhibited in numerous exhibitions including the 1892 French Salon, where she won a third place medal, competing against almost 200 exhibitors. Marie-Caire was also a member of several prestigious societies including the Société des Artistes Français (the Society of French Artists); l’Union des Femmes peintres, sculpteurs, et graveurs, (The Union of Female Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers); and the Société des Artistes Orientalistes (The Society of Orientalists Artists).
