Louise Nevelson was a leading figure in sculpture during the 20th century. Working primarily in monochromatic wood assemblages that transcended space and the viewer’s comprehension of art. Nevelson immigrated to the United States during 1905 from Pereyaslav in Russia as a young child with her family. Originally studying in voice and dramatics until 1930 in which she joined the Art Students League of New York. There she was able to study under Hans Hofmann in Munich and traveled throughout Europe. She assisted Diego Rivera on a mural for The New Workers’ School in New York during 1933. It wasn’t until 1941 she had her first solo exhibition in New York at the Nierendorf Gallery. During 1954 she produced her first series of wood landscape sculptures. During her lifetime she was active in many organizations including the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors and League of Present Day Artists. Her work can be found in institutions around the world including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London, England; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France; and The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.
