Circa 1860 Antique Rosewood Treat Lindsey & Co. Portable Melodeon
Item Details
A beautiful melodeon built by Treat Lindsey & Co. of New Haven, CT, circa 1860 (as Treat and Lindsey only produced melodeons from 1856-1863). This instrument is a small reed organ that was operated by pumping the large iron right pedal which then operated a swell shutter, with the left pedal being used for volume control. Unfortunately, the pedals are missing from this example. Melodeon has ivory keys, brass hinges, velvet coverings for some areas and a metal plaque that states ‘Treat Lindsey & Co., New Haven, Conn..’ During the mid-19th Century, these little melodeons were often the only form of musical entertainment in rural America. This style of melodeon is known as a ‘Portable Melodeon’ and its legs are designed to fold up under the instrument for easy transport. This melodeon is made of beautiful rosewood veneer with elegantly carved lyre legs and carved moldings. All melodeons are truly antique, the last instruments having been built more than 130 years ago.
Fully restored portable melodeons identical to this one are listed for $9,000-$10,000 at antique piano retailers.
