Kurt Shaw, born and raised Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earned a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1989, and then began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist. He was met with immediate success, having his work in national publications including Cosmopolitan, The Saturday Evening Post, Woman’s World, the National Enquirer and more. In 1992 he shifted his focus to fine art, and began creating sculpture, including a major commission from his alma mater. After moving to California and establishing a studio in San Francisco, Shaw returned to Pittsburgh in 2000, where he remains the art critic for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and runs Shaw Galleries in the city’s cultural district. He continues to create both small sculptures and large-scale commissions and is represented by galleries across the midwest.
