Minnie Adkins was born in a small rural Appalachian town called Isonville, Kentucky. She was drawn to carving and whittling at an early age and has pursued the craft throughout her life. Her work has been featured in numerous public and private collections, including being on display in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the Kentucky Folk Art Center. As she continues her work, she collaborates on children’s books and she and her husband founded the popular folk craft fair, “A Day in the Country.” Her life and work were featured in a short documentary, Minnie Adkins: Portrait of a Folk Artist in 2004. In 1992, she was awarded the Jane Norton Award; in 1993 she was awarded an Award of Distinction from the Folk Art Society of America; and in 1994 she was given an Appalachian Treasure Award. She is a living legend representing the finest of folk craft in America.
