English Hammered Silver Shillings of Edward VI and Elizabeth I, ca. 1549 and 1558. Lot contains two hammered shillings of two of King Henry VIII’s children. Lot includes a shilling of the boy king, Edward VI, ca. 1549, and a shilling of Queen Elizabeth I, a First Issue shilling from ca. 1558. Edward’s coin depicts the young king facing right in a crown, with the Tudor Coat-of-Arms on the reverse. Elizabeth’s coin depicts the queen facing left in a crown, with the Tudor Coat-of-Arms on the reverse. Edward’s shilling was produced at the rare Durham House Mint, and is composed of debased silver due to the economy at the time of minting. Elizabeth’s shilling is composed of silver, and has a Lis mintmark. Edward VI shilling- Weight: 5.2 grams. Diameter: 30.6 mm. Elizabeth I shilling- Weight: 5.5 grams. Diameter: 33 mm.
