Born in California, Ohio, William J. Forsyth moved with his parents to Indianapolis when he was just six years old. Forsyth began to draw at a very young age, preferring to capture the beauty of the outdoors, a preference that would stick with him throughout his career. Due to financial restrictions, Forsyth was unable to pursue his passion academically and instead worked as a house painter with his brother for a few years until he had saved enough money to enroll in Indiana School of Art. In 1885, the artist was presented with an opportunity to study art abroad at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. Here he studied drawing under Professor Benezm and Nicolas Cyeis and painting under Van Leoeffz. Receiving acclaim from his teachers and peers, Forsyth was invited to exhibit at the Munich International Exposition of 1888. The artist eventually returned to the United States where he accepted a position teaching at the Indiana School of Art at Indianapolis, working with celebrated Indiana impressionist Theodore Clement Steele. Forsyth was one of the Indianapolis artists composing the Hosier group, the other being Theodore Clement Steele, Richard Gruelle, J. Ottis Adams, and Otto Stark. He was a charter member of the Society of Western Artists, and his work was represented in the collections of Kansas City, Minnesota Art Association, Indianapolis Art Association, Richmond Art Association, and other cities. Today his work can be found in a number of private collections.
