Born into a family of artists, Gustave Alaux was born in France in 1887, to the son of the head curator of the Musèe des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. In 1907 Alaux moved to Paris to study at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, later working under Henri Royer at the Academie Julian. Alaux began exhibiting in salons in 1920 and during World War I was commissioned by the minister of armed forces of France to create a series of 95 stamps titled ‘La légende de France’ with the purpose of showcasing the natural rigor and exceptionalism present in French culture. Alaux’s passion for the sea, as well as Bordeaux’s ties to the West Indies, is evident in his marine and naval scenes and his idealistic depictions of life in the colonies. Today his work belongs in the permanent collections of the Rectorat de l’académie de Paris, The Bordeaux Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, and the Dunkerque Musée des Beaux-Arts. His work can also be found in a number of private collections.

Condition

- significant wear and some chipping to the finish on the frame; accretion, craquelure, and some lifting to the composition; no inpainting visible when examined under UV light; toning visible to the canvas to the verso.
