Martin was an American artist best known for his soft use of color and light in his landscapes and coastal views. Largely self-taught, Martin was one of the first American painters to experiment with Impressionism. Born in Albany, New York in 1836, he was first influenced by the Hudson River School. He was an elected member of the National Academy of Design. After a few trips to Europe for travel and study during the 1870s, Martin was exposed to the Impressionists and the Barbizon School. Upon returning to the United States, his oeuvre became more tonal and loose in style. In 1983, he settled in St. Paul, Minnesota near family due to declining health. In 1895, nearly blind, he produced one of his most revered paintings, Adirondack Scenery from memory. His works are displayed in important American museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Albany Institute of History and Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more.

- canvas has been relined and waxed to verso; scattered inpainting; paint loss to upper right and lower left; yellowing to varnish; buckling to canvas; scattered craquelure with areas of lift; dust and scattered accretion; cracking and chipping to frame, loss to molding to upper left corner.
