A Massachusetts native, Powers was a regional painter best known for her modernist landscapes and portraits. During the 1940s, she and her husband Jason Berger (1924 – 2010) studied under Expressionist artist Karl Zerbe (1903 – 1972), who was director of the painting department at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The artists received a primarily Expressionist education but highly admired the Post-Impressionism works of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, as well as the Fauvists works of Henri Matisse and André Derain. By 1971, both Powers and Berger were represented by the Judi Rotenberg Gallery, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition to gaining gallery representation, the husband and wife duo established the Direct Vision artists’ group aimed at creating community engagement through art. Powers’ oeuvre expresses an understanding and fusion of the early 20th century modern art movements.
