Bustamante is a Mexican artist best known for his Surrealist sculptures depicting whimsical and sometimes sinister creatures. He first studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara. Without landing a job as an architect, he turned to art while he was living in Amsterdam. Bustamante found success quickly in the art world with his first exhibition of papier-mâché objects and naïve paintings in 1966 at Galeria Misracha. By the mid 1970s, Bustamante established a workshop in Tlaquepaque, Mexico and it is still in operations today. Working in a variety of materials, his papier-mâché, pottery and bronze works are highly collected.
