Best known for his landscape and marine life paintings, Hamilton was born in Ireland, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received the nickname “The American Turner” because of his vivid use of lighting effects in his paintings. Hamilton was also an illustrator and created works for books by John Frost and Arctic explorer Elisha Kent Kane.

Condition

- some loss and scratches along edges of painting; craquelure in upper half of painting particularly in middle of left side; areas of blistering in lower half of painting particularly on right side; dust accretion and wear to frame; separating at corners of frame.
