Known as America’s Last Impressionist, Robert Philipp received his formal art training at the Art Students League under the tutelage of Frank Vincent DuMond and George Bridgman. He later studied under Douglas Volk and George Willoughby Maynard at the National Academy of Design. Phillip was an acclaimed artist throughout his career; best known for his sensitive and intimate portraits, leisurely genre scenes recalling Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, and landscapes depicting modernity. He was commissioned to paint portraits of Golden Age Hollywood stars and often used his wife Shelly (Rochelle) Post, as the model. Phillip taught at Art Students’ League of New York and the National Academy of Design, where he was known to focus on color and drawing, mentoring the next generation of American artists. He was an elected member of the National Academy of Design and Royal Society of Arts, and continued to paint for over sixty years. His work has been collected by numerous renowned institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, among many others.
