Oil painting on academy board
Signed to lower left
Born in Philadelphia, William Trost Richards was a noted American landscape and marine painter. From a young age, Richards worked to support his family as a designer and illustrator of decorative metal objects. All the while, he privately studied fine art under William Stanley Haseltine and Paul Weber. Although he is often associated with the Hudson River School, Richards embraced realism, rather than the romanticism of the New England landscape, specifically the White Mountains. His first exhibition was organized by Albert Bierstadt in 1858. By 1871, Richards was elected as a full member to the National Academy. His works are held in important American collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University Art Gallery, and more.
