Ziem was a French painter working in the style of the Barbizon School. While he first worked as an architect, Ziem studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and became a painter after traveling to Venice, Italy during 1841. Ziem was featured in his first exhibition at the Paris Salon in 1849 and continued to exhibit at the salon for many years. Many of his best known Venice waterscapes can be found in collections throughout the United State and Europe.
Condition
- horizontal crack across center of board; scattered craquelure and inpainting, most notably to area surrounding crack; scattered paint loss, most notably to upper right corner; scattered areas of uneven varnish; minor nicks, cracks and finish wear to frame.
