Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1922, George Kunkel is known for his modernist landscape paintings and collages. Educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Kunkel continued his studies at the Art Students League where he studied under Harry Sternberg, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Vaclav Vytlacil. In 1955 the artist’s work was shown in its first one-man exhibition at the Baltimore Museum and has since been exhibited in many museums and private galleries. Today Kunkel’s work can be found in the Headly Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Museum of Art of Ogunquit, as well as in the Philips Exter Academy.
