Born Anders Gittelson in 1921, André Gisson was a noted American Impressionist painter of the 20th century. A graduate of the Pratt Institute of New York City, Gittelson struggled to find a living as an artist until taking the drastic steps of moving to France and legally changing his name. Under the guise of ‘André Gisson’, Gittelson adopted the professional persona of a French-born artist involved in the Impressionist scene of the early 20th century. This ruse indeed broke him into the art market, and in the decades following World War II, Gisson exhibited his work throughout both hemispheres, including London, New York City, and Tokyo. Today, his paintings belong to the public and private collections across the world, including the Smithsonian Institution and the collection of President Lyndon B. Johnson.
