Born in Brooklyn, New York Paul Dougherty graduated from New York Law School in 1898, initially following in the footsteps of his Attorney father. Unsatisfied with his work, Dougherty pivoted into art and studied with leading painter and teacher Robert Henri both in the United States and in Europe from 1900-1905. Dougherty gained notoriety for his Maine seascapes and in 1907 was elected member to the National Academy of Design in New York. Seeking a warmer climate Dougherty spent the remainder of his life painting the dessert landscape of Arizona. His work is held is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Joslyn Museum in Omaha; and the Fort Worth Museum in Texas as well as many other museums and private collections.
