Born in Northeastern France, Schuffenecker became a controversial figure in the Post-Impressionism movement. Befriending Paul Gaugin early in his career, the two artists studied at the Académie Suisse and later worked at the Académie Colarossi. As an early collector of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and a skilled artist, many of Schuffenecker’s works show his interest in emulating van Gogh’s talent. The cachet d’atelier designed by him in 1890 is a lotus, with his initials intertwined in the leaves. Schuffenecker’s paintings are internationally collected and can be found at Musée d’Orsay, Musée du Louvre, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Tate Gallery, and more.
