Graphic designer and self-taught photographer Carl Fischer is especially known for his iconic Esquire cover photos of the 1960s, some of which feature John F. Kennedy, Muhammad Ali, Richard Nixon, James Baldwin, Andy Warhol, and other notable figures. Raised in Brooklyn, Fischer studied at The Cooper Union and in London the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design as a Fullbright Fellow. Early in his career, he worked with Paul Rand and Herb Lubalin as an advertising agency art director in New York. Some of his notable work includes portraits of Southern segregationist leaders and his photomontages of Warhol and his entourage that spans two decades. Fischer’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous reputable institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, The George Eastman House, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
