At age 9, Lark began to study art during the evenings and on Saturdays at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He received a traditional college education and received a doctorate from University of Colorado. In 1961, he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue an art career. During that time, he worked as a commission portrait artist and exhibited throughout the decade. However work began to diminish when his African American identity was revealed. This event coincided with the Civil Rights movement and Lark became an active figure in the movement. In 1967, Lark joined Art West Associated (AWA), a black arts organization that promoted cultural discussion, organized educational programs, and agitated for recognition and participation in mainstream art institutions. By the 1980s, Lark gained success again, receiving artistic awards and exhibiting internationally.
