Untitled (seascape), 1964
Oil painting on canvas board
Signed and dated to lower right
Born in Mazatlan, Mexico in 1901, Alexander Maldonado moved with his family to San Fransisco in 1910 right after the start of the Mexican Revolution. Working in shipyards, factories and even as a professional boxer, Maldonado did not begin painting until after his retirement at age 60. Fascinated with ideas of a more technologically advanced future, and drawing inspiration from scientific encyclopedias as well as his childhood sighting of Halley’s Comet, many of Maldonado’s narrative works incorporate fantastic elements and multi spacial references. His pieces can be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum as well as a number of private collections.
