Provenance
Purchased from the estate of Anne Hunt Coe, wife of the artist.

Born in Selma, Alabama in 1904, Coe was a Regional painter who developed his style and gained success during the Great Depression. After attending Castle Heights Military Academy, Coe turned his attention to studying architecture at the University of Cincinnati. After one year, he was awarded a scholarship to study art at the Grand Central School of Art, and later at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Colorado Springs Art School. Coe obtained a director post with the Alabama Art Projects for the Works Progress Administration. During his time with the WPA, Coe painted public murals, became a master etcher, and a member of the National Society of Etchers, New Orleans Etching Society, and Philadelphia Etching Society. Coe established several studios and workshops throughout his career; in Florence, Birmingham, and New York.
