Born in Niigata, Tadashi Nakayama was Japanese woodblock artist, known for his style that exhibited influences from both Japanese ukiyo-e prints and Western art, particularly that of the Renaissance. However, having traveled to India, he was also strongly influenced by Indian and Persian miniatures from the 14th through the 17th centuries. Many of his woodblocks often feature horses, butterflies, and girls with wind-blown hair, rendered with intricate patterns, fine delineations, and at times, gold and silver leaf embellishments.
