Born in 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Robert, sometimes known as ‘Hass’ Hasselhoff, made his mark on the local art scene of the 1960’s and 70’s with his satirical drawings. Never considering himself a professional artist, Hasselhoff was working as a priest at Elder High School in the early 1960s. However, he decided to start weekly meetings for artistically inclined students, eventually creating the Elder Art Department. His vivid compositions, often playfully irreverent scenes showing half dressed woman and controversial nightlife, incorporate a mix of folk and pop elements. In 2006 a Hasselhoff retrospective titled ‘Spirited Life’ was held at the Malton Gallery, curated by former student and Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, Jim Borgman. Today his work is held in the University of Cincinnati archive as well as in a number of private collections.
