Paul Delvaux was born in Belgium on September 23, 1897. He studied architecture and painting at the Academie des Beaux-Arts. He then established a studio in Brussels before becoming a professor of painting at the Ecole Nationale Superiere d’art and d’architecture and president of the Academie Royale des Beaux-arts. Late into his life Delvaux painted landscapes almost exclusively before discovering the surrealist work of de Chirico and Magritte. It was then that he destroyed his previous paintings and adapted to the Surrealist movement. His work often showed scenes of alienation with skewing perspectives and frigid behaviors from the figures within them. Delvaux’s work is collected by various private and public collections throughout the world.
