Born in 1893, Beatrice Wood was a painter and sculptor known for her luster-glazed ceramics. She initially studied acting at the Comédie Française and went on to study painting at the Académie Julian before returning to the United States during World War I. Wood soon became friends with Marcel Duchamp and Henri-Pierre Roche, forming the Society of Independent Artists and publishing ‘’The Blindman,’ which was a Dadaist journal. Her autobiography, I Shock Myself, describes her intricate life including her experiences following the philosopher Krishnamurti in Ojai in the 1940s. Wood even became the inspiration for the character Rose for the movie ‘Titanic’ through her friendship with her neighbor, James Cameron. Her artistic career truly started when she could not find pottery to match a pair of plates and decided to make her own. She continued to make ceramics from her early forties until hear death in 1998, at the age of 105.
